Wood Density and Ring Width in Quercus rotundifolia Trees in Southern Portugal
نویسندگان
چکیده
Quercus rotundifolia Lam., known as holm oak or evergreen oak, occurs naturally in the western Mediterranean region, mainly part of agroforestry agrosilvopastoral systems Portugal (“montado”) and Spain (“dehesa”), is economically important for acorn production. Less attention has been given to Q. wood, its density variability not known, namely related tree growth. The wood 20 trees was measured along radial direction by X-ray densitometry factors responsible ring width variation within between were investigated at two sites located main species region southern Portugal. Ring significantly different sites, with an average 1.81 mm 1.55 mm. Wood very high averaged 888 kg/m3 914 but sites. showed a positive significant correlation both Cambial age source density, while between-tree effects accounted considerable proportion variation. results are contribution valorisation aiming high-value products, also adding knowledge on growth interest selection sustainable management.

متن کاملEffects of Recent Minimum Temperature and Water Deficit Increases on Pinus pinaster Radial Growth and Wood Density in Southern Portugal
Western Iberia has recently shown increasing frequency of drought conditions coupled with heatwave events, leading to exacerbated limiting climatic conditions for plant growth. It is not clear to what extent wood growth and density of agroforestry species have suffered from such changes or recent extreme climate events. To address this question, tree-ring width and density chronologies were bui...

Wood is the most important natural and endlessly renewable source of energy and therefore has a major future role as an environmentally cost-effective alternative to burning fossils fuels. The major role of wood is not only the provision of energy but also the provision of energy-sufficient material for our buildings and many other products. In addition, developing wood cells represent one of t...

Variations in tree-ring structure are simulated with (1) an empirical model using monthly climatic data as statistical predictors and (2) a mechanisbc model using daily climatic data as growth limiting conditions. The empirical model calibrates standardized ring-width and density chronologies of tree-rings with monthly temperature, precipitation or Palmer Drought Severity Index. The empirical m...
متن کاملFlood-Ring Formation and Root Development in Response to Experimental Flooding of Young Quercus robur Trees
Spring flooding in riparian forests can cause significant reductions in earlywood-vessel size in submerged stem parts of ring-porous tree species, leading to the presence of 'flood rings' that can be used as a proxy to reconstruct past flooding events, potentially over millennia. The mechanism of flood-ring formation and the relation with timing and duration of flooding are still to be elucidat...
